According to a Canadian news report, “right-wing” Americans are now ganging up against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In response to his invocation of the Emergencies Act by the Liberal government, Republicans in the United States have released a barrage of vitriol against the uber-leftist national leader.

Senator John Kennedy: “I would gently say to the Prime Minister, if you’re going to be a smart ass, first you have to be smart otherwise you’re just an ass.”

Trudeau’s quote about admiring China’s dictatorship are appearing in politician’s social media feeds, including that of Senator Ted Cruz. Republican Senator Marjorie Taylor Greene referred to Trudeau as a dictator. While Canadian state broadcaster CBC positioned the accusations as a passing fad, they neglect a fundamental question:

Are these people correct? In comparison to the dictatorship in China, perhaps not. Not yet, anyway. Within the context of North American politics, however, these people are on to something. Much of it comes in the form of “pushing the boundaries.”

Justin Trudeau has done so since day one. In truth, the Liberals have never fully embraced democratic governance. Rather, they work along its periphery. Pushing its limits, discovering loopholes– Team Trudeau deal with democracy as if it is a political prison cell from which to escape. Our Liberal government are the Shawshank Redemption of Canadian politics.
