Hundreds of Antifa-led revolutionaries, aided by a liberal City Council member, stormed Seattle’s City Hall Tuesday night to demand the resignation of Mayor Jenny Durkan, just days after seizing a six-block downtown zone that includes a shuttered police precinct. They are setting up tents inside the cop-free zone and are calling the territory the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” or CHAZ. Mayor Durkan fell into disfavor when she refused to defund the police department and re-authorized officers to use tear gas to clear crowds late Sunday night.
The Communist revolutionary group is calling for armed guards to patrol the perimeters and extorting local business owners in the autonomous zone. Police said they will respond to the area only if there is a 911 emergency call. Police are also reported to be considering abandoning another precinct, which would result in expanding Antifa’s territory. The group published a list of 30 demands that include abolition of the Police Department and the ‘Criminal Justice Apparatus’, a retrial of all People of Color currently serving prison sentences for violent crimes, rent control, and free college across Washington state.
