Liberalism is a political philosophy based on individual libertyconsent of the governed and equality before the law.

The Liberal ethos generally support individual rightsdemocracysecularismfreedom of speechfreedom of the pressfreedom of religion and a market economy.

The core competencies of liberalism include:

— willingness to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one’s own; openness to new ideas.

— a political and social philosophy that promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise.

To state that these values have eroded within modern Canadian society is putting it mildly. “Consent of the governed” is a thing of the past. Poll after poll reveal divergence between public opinion and government policy. The most recent being opinion on a full boycott of the Beijing Olympics. Immigration policy, refugee intake, citizenship for terrorists– time and again Liberal government decision-making runs counter to public will.

Individual rights is a most contentious issue. Covid-related restrictions are impeding this fundamental of liberalism in a profound capacity.

Brian Peckford, former premier of Newfoundland, was part of the group of lawmakers and politicians who formulated Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the early 1980’s.

In terms of the impact of the pandemic, Mr. Peckford states in an interview that he “cannot believe what is happening to our country. I am extremely saddened by government enacting measures that clearly violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”
